HENRY'S CHICKEN RICE 兴利鸡饭

47906804431_be8910fc7a_o.jpg

Most of the ?roasted chicken? sold at our hawker centres are not actually roasted but deep fried or at least bathed in hot oil in order to produce that beautiful, bronzed skin color!

I actually prefer roasted chicken to white chicken and if given a choice, I would choose it over white chicken anytime!

Unfortunately, there aren?t many stalls which actually specialise in roasted chicken which always seem to play 2nd fiddle to white poached chicken.

However, over at the sleepy little hawker centre in Commonwealth Crescent is a couple who have been specializing in roasted chicken rice since 1985. I was visiting the hawker centre for Hammee?s burger when I happened to meet a friend of mine who swears that he doesn?t eat roasted chicken rice from anywhere else!

The stall is called ?Henry? chicken rice, which would have been even more unusual back in the 80′s.

It turns out that the stall was named after their son who ironically didn?t end up taking over the business, unlike Abdhus Salam and Habib?s, the two Indian rojak stalls over at Ayer Rajah Food Centre.

I have read numerous reviews about Henry's Chicken Rice at Commonwealth Crescent Market & Food Centre just across from Hao Hao Noodle House and I decided to check them out.

I am particularly intrigued by two of the reviews which mentioned about a certain black-faced auntie. Why is she black-faced? I reminded myself not to blindly believe everything that was posted online. Who knows, it might have been a disgruntled customer bad mouthing her?

On the day of my visit, I approached the stall with an open mind. Surely, the auntie will not be black-faced for no rhyme or reason?

Her back was facing me when I stood in front of the stall. It was still early so a queue have not build up yet.

When she turned around, I have to say, I was taken aback by her expression. Her face was, like they said - black.

Roasted chicken with a really good chilli sauce and soy sauce dressing that brings back memories!

This place is not a halal-certified eatery.

Food is very nice and satisfying.

The food price is reasonable so order away!

Bak Chor Mee with Super Shiok Lard & Chilli

Just two weeks ago, I dropped by the market to buy breakfast and decided to queue for Fa Ji Minced Meat Fishball Noodle.

To my surprise, it was cooked by 29-year-old Aloysius. He caught my attention because he was really swift in his cooking and my bowl of noodles was really not bad!

I won?t say I frequented the stall but I went there for dinner quite a few times on the weekends but I never met the young hawker.

It?s always his uncle who works the evening shift. It?s nice to finally meet Aloysius.

Aloysius is the third generation hawker at Fa Ji Minced Meat Fishball Noodle.

He has been helping out at his father?s stall since he was still in school.

His grandmother and father first started selling wanton noodles in Geylang.

After the market was demolished, they moved to Kovan Market and decided to sell minced meat fishball noodles instead.

Everyday during lunch and dinner, expect to see queues. Go early to avoid long queue.

I just went to try and my verdict was "GOOD".

SWEE GUAN HOKKIEN MEE

52146109920_4c102c5182_o.jpg

Charcoal-Fried Hokkien Mee That Has Been Around Since 1968!

Hailed as one of the best Hokkien mee stalls in Singapore, Swee Guan Hokkien Mee is no stranger to attention and media coverage. This is where you can find a plate of hokkien mee cooked over a charcoal fire, so expect an infusion of wok hei, along with a generous amount of good quality toppings.

Located along Geylang Lorong 29, this stall is not to be confused with the one on East Coast Road that has the same name as Swee Guan Hokkien Mee’s location (though the owners come from the same family!) First started in 1968, the stall is now helmed by a second-gen chef who learnt his skills from his predecessor aka father, and he has been there for over 40 years since. One thing’s for sure, the hawkers of Swee Guan Hokkien Mee are not the biggest fans of cameras and small talk. They’re a little on the gruff side, only speaking to customers when necessary but hey, at least they’re efficient when dishing out plates of their famous Hokkien mee, which is priced at $6 for small, $8 for medium and $10 for large.

Customer service aside, good food speaks for itself and their Hokkien mee was more eloquent in connecting with the stomachs of hungry folks. I got the medium-sized plate and it looked like a regular portion that could usually be bought at most hawker centres for a lower price. That is, if you miss the four larger-than-usual prawns and smattering of sotong woven into the noods.

The perfect in-between of dry and wet Hokkien mee, the mix of yellow noodles and thick bee hoon were well-infused with the seafood stock it was cooked in and held a lot of flavour in just one mouthful. Whispers of wok hei came through well without overshadowing the flavours of the noodles, though I would have preferred it to be slightly stronger. Mix in the sambal on the side to bring forth a tingly heat that lingers as you continue making your way through your plate.

Still, I’m a little unsure on whether I would return for this pricey Hokkien mee but there’s no doubt that this is one of the better renditions that you can find in Singapore. There’s bound to be mixed reviews on Swee Guan Hokkien Mee so we would love to hear what you think – overhyped or worth the price?

183 Prawn Noodle and Yong Tau Foo

183-Prawn-Noodle-and-Yong-Tau-Foo-630x420.jpg

Situated within a coffeeshop at Toa Payoh Central that is bustling during the weekday lunchtime hours, 183 Prawn Noodle Yong Tau Foo has had a long history. Besides Zhen Jie Hakka Yong Dou Fu, this is another stall that offers the special pairing of yong tau foo + chee cheong fun ($3.50/$4.50/$5.50).

Flavourful along with a smooth texture of the chee cheong fun but I’d still go for Zhen Jie’s version.

Nonetheless, the yong tau foo soup and ingredients were very tasty with the soup broth having a tinge of peppery flavour that gives it oomph.

One of the best yong tau foo so till date. Try it and you will know. Confirm no regret.

Ah Huat Wanton Mee

Cheap & good food in Dunman

Dunman Food Centre, built in 1974, is one of the smallest food centres in Singapore. It has only about 30 stalls but it is the number of stalls with cheap and good food in a food centre that really counts.

One of the several stalls that serves cheap and good food is Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee in Dunman Food Centre.

Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee is located in the lower level of the 2 storey Dunman Food Centre.

It right next to the Say Seng Famous Tau Kwa Pau stall. The wanton noddles shop opens early and there are many customers who go there for breakfast.

When we visited Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee, we were given a number tag.

Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Noodle should not be a foreign name for Wanton lovers; it was previously helmed by the famous Ang Moh Wanton Noodles, which has since made its root at the food centre after going into hibernation for years.

Occupying two stalls side by side, ordering is fortunately, facilitated by an LED board, so customers can sit and have a cup of coffee while waiting.

The tag allowed us to place our order when the number was shown on the digital panel. Expect to wait 10 to 30 minutes if you are eating at Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee.

This is undoubtedly very good news for all fans of Ang Moh Wanton Mee! For me, it is a good Wanton Mee to satisfy the craving if I happen to be in the vicinity.

Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Noodles? savoury and mildly spicy sauce will continue to attract the group of loyal fans, That said, their noodles are not something that will keep you up at night, craving for it. Its mediocre taste was not convincing enough to warrant revisits from us

However, if you consider yourself a Wanton Mee aficionado, then it behooves you to pay this heritage stall at least a visit to see what the hoo-ha is all about.

Food is very nice and satisfying.

CITRUS BY THE POOL (Halal)

35005061892_db530b669f_b.jpg

This is the one ond only very cool Western and Asian fusion cuisine at pocket friendly prices at Woodlands Swimming Complex

As a true heartlander within Woodlands, I am often envious of my friends who live within central spaces surrounded by trendy cafes and popular food hangouts. If I asked any of them to come over to Woodlands, they’ll most likely go “Huh, so ulu where got place to eat?” or “let’s go Johor Bahru instead”. Finally, the day has come when there is a café here in the northern part of Singapore that I can be proud of.

It is a sure delights hidden in the north.

Citrus By The Pool is a Halal-certified café restaurant nestled at Woodlands Swimming Complex, which is really just a 10-minute walk or short drive from Woodlands or Marsiling MRT station. We stepped in and was greeted by retro-themed interior with cozy lights hanging from exposed wooden beams. Citrus By The Pool prides itself in its range of affordable food offerings, including Western food, Asian Fusion Cuisine and desserts. As a bonus, the café does not have a service charge built into your bills which provides for an even more pocket friendly dining experience.

For events or celebrations, customers can now book the indoor or alfresco area with a view of the swimming pools. Takeaways, bentos and event catering are available as well. There is another sister joint, Citrus Bistro, which is now operating at Sengkang Sports Centre since December 2016. In addition to selling their signature dishes such as the Tom Yum Seafood Pasta, Citrus Bistro primarily focuses on light bites and comfort food such as Curry Chicken with Rice or Bread. With such value-for-money food treats, I hope you’ll come prepped with your sports gear and empty tummies. Citrus By The Pool gets really busy on weekend nights, so just remember to call and make a reservation for dine-ins!

Dont miss it.

Lai Heng Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle (來興香菇肉脞麵) at Lorong 4 Toa Payoh is said to be one of the best bak chor mee in Singapore. But there seems to be some recent Google reviews that have differing views. We recently set out to check out this top BCM stall in Singapore.

When a famous hawker stall achieves nation-wide fame, it is always a good idea to visit it during a low off-peak hour. We went on a weekday at around 1030 am. Just after the market breakfast crowd but before the working folks show up for lunch. This famous BCM stall is located in a coffee shop in Block 73 Lor 4 Toa Payoh.

Lai Heng's Teochew "Ah Hia" boss who looks in his late 50s said he has been selling bak chor mee since he was 15 years old. He said he started at Toa Payoh block 102 before coming here at block 51 after several shifts through the years. (Now, they are at Lor 4 Toa Payoh, Block 73.)

The coffeeshop was moderately busy but with several empty tables available. It is offer wet or dry.

The Lai Heng Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle stall was a busy place with a few people attending to the customers. Ordering was easy as the choice of food was limited to selecting the type of noodles, the size ($5, $6 or $7) and whether to have the noodles dry or with soup. We selected a kway teow soup and dry mee, both in a medium $6 size. Our first choice for dry noodle would have been mee pok, but it was sold out.

Lai Heng Mushroom Minced Meat Mee serves filling and satisfying bak chor mee which won it a large loyal following, especially among Toa Payoh folks.

Hong Kee Beef Noodle

Hainanese Beef Noodles At Amoy Food Centre. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

This stall was previously from Tanglin Koek Road, then moved to Cuppage Centre (I remember this – am I revealing my age?) to its current location at Amoy Street Food Centre.

There was a moderately long queue, about 5 people in line, when I visited during opening hours at 11am.

For this particular food centre, coming at peak hour lunch time could be ‘claustrophobic’ as many office workers around the CBD come here for cheap hawker food. Okay, too extreme a word, but you get my point.

Taste wise, it could be milder than the average beef noodles at the food court, to the point that some might think that the gravy is bland. (We, meaning Singaporeans, generally prefer more flavours in food.)

The overall combination was perhaps marred by the generic factory-made beef balls. I couldn’t ask for too much, could I?

Die Die also must try.Don't miss it.

Go early to avoid long queue. We would like to invite all customers to give this place a try.

This is really a hidden gem
First it’s in Pasir Ris, so I happen to be there for a job.
First of all the decor is really simple
Not appealing, do not look like it’s a famous bak chor mee place . But it’s cosy, it’s air con, it’s abit modern but it’s just doesn’t looks like a place that can serve super nice bak chor mee

went in anyway, menu only on counter . No menu on the walls.
Service: very homely and friendly
Price : $5.80 onwards
Taste : sibei good ! Old school handmade fish ball taste !
their prawn paste ball is super good.
the noodles and chilli is power, been along time since I taste this kind of old school taste of bak chor mee !
it’s not the same league as the Crawford lane vinegar Heavy Teochew bak chor mee taste .
it’s more towards the chilli fragrance kind ! 那帝北丐 top of its own.
soup is also good , with little tong cai - to bring out the sweetness of the fish ball soup taste, and zero fishy smell!

will I go back : yes I will, it will take me 50mins to go back from my work or home

bros who stay there ho sei just drop by nia… others no choice, got go there can try. Very worth!

Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodle

A hidden gem still selling Claypot Bak Chor Mee with handmade ingredients.

During these hard times of dining restrictions and WFH crowds putting a dent in many hawkers? livelihoods, we?ve seen many kind souls publicise hawkers that need our support during this time.

The latest stall that has been getting a lot of traction on the popular Hawkers United 2020 facebook group is Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodle, operated solo by an elderly lady.

Located at the popular CBD lunch hotspot of Maxwell Food Centre, Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodle sells their signature Bak Chor Mee for a crazy low price of just S$2.50, a rare find in the normally pricey CBD area.

With the dwindling lunch crowds in the area, it?s a tumultuous uptake to stay afloat for many hawkers. And for places like Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodle who still insist on providing the best handmade love to their customers, they really deserve our support.

The stall is run by an elderly woman who manages it alone. When news of the stall came to light on the Hawkers United 2020 Facebook group, her daughter thanked netizens for praising the stall in the comments.

She also shared that her mother?s business suffered a lot due to the pandemic and the multiple restrictions, selling only 10 bowls a day.

Yet, instead of making meatballs and dumplings in bulk to freeze and save herself the time and cost, the elderly owner still insisted on hand-making all the ingredients that go into her noodles daily, from scratch.

Chai Chee Kway Chap

chai-chee-kway-chap.jpg

One thing that many of us Singaporeans love to indulge in is some good-old kway chap.

This sinful yet satisfying dish is a popular favourite that is sold at multiple hawker centres all over Singapore. Despite looking so simple, a dish like kway chap is not easy to prepare.

It requires a lot of tedious preparation such as proper cleaning of the innards as well as long hours of braising.

Tucked away at in Blk 216 Bedok Market and Food Centre is Chai Chee Kway Chap, a humble stall that serves up some pretty decent kway chap for when the cravings come at you hard and fast.

This is one of the few stalls at Blk 216 Bedok that has a long, snaking queue. As Singaporeans, we all know that if there is a queue, it means the food is probably good, so we had high expectations of this place.

There was also a decent amount of servings of juicy pork belly, tau pok as well as half a hard-boiled egg. The kway was also nice and smooth and we appreciate how the soup for the kway was not too salty and overwhelming.

All in all, it was a pretty filling meal that left us full and satisfied. We definitely won?t mind coming back here again when the kway chap cravings strike.

Jiak by Jin Feng 金峰

Bubble Tea and food collaborations are what Singaporeans would continue to expect, as BBT businesses found a way to ?survive? after the ?Circuit Breaker? measures.

Due to the extended ?Circuit Breaker?, all standalone BBT outlets that sell only beverages are required to close their outlets.

So BBT shops in Singapore started forming partnerships (some not quite expected), from KOI with Grain, CHICHA San Chen 吃茶三千 with Yu Kee Duck Rice and Milksha with Yum Cha.

Jiak by Jin Feng 金峰 has also worked with PlayMade by 丸作. At least both are selling Taiwanese food, so at least there is some synergy.

Mahjong Themed Local Dessert Cafe That Opens Till 3AM, At Jalan Besar Near Swee Choon

Tian Wang 甜旺 is a local dessert café that opens till 3AM daily, located next to Butter Studio at 145 Jalan Besar.

Just so you know: the shop is a family-owned business, and the interior is mahjong-themed as that is what all of them love to play.

(On a side note: other than the ”Fa” feature wall, I wished the MJ theme would be applied to other aspects from the tables, accessories, to even names of desserts. Just so that it is more fun and cohesive.)

Some of the recipes for the more traditional desserts such as Orh Nee, Sesame, Almond and Peanut pastes are passed down from the late grandmother of the family.

However, the owners also improvised the menu a little to attract a younger dining crowd.

They were only toying the idea of opening a shop for the longest time, but it was their uncle who is a veteran Singapore actor (with the surname Li) who gave them the confidence to try it out.

Tian Wang appears to be a promising local dessert café that supper-goers would love to head to.

However, there were some operation processes to be ironed out – during our first visit dessert were served fast, while the second time it took more than 20 minutes despite visiting during off-peak hour with not many customers around.
